BREATH EASY WEEK: 22 JUNE 2021

Today (Tuesday 22nd June) marks the start of Breathe Easy Week, the HSE’s awareness campaign promoting lung health.

Each year, it is estimated that 12,000 people die from work-related lung diseases linked to exposure during their working lives. Breathing in dusts, gases, fumes and vapours in the workplace can cause serious, long-term lung damage. Often, this can be due to being exposed to a substance many years before.

Employers are obliged law to control the risks to workers from exposure to hazardous substances.

By protecting workers effectively now, you can prevent them from suffering from severe, often incurable, lung-related health problems in the future.

These are some of the higher risk sectors identified by the HSE:

  • Construction - cutting, drilling and sanding
  • Welding
  • Stonework
  • Cement and concrete manufacture
  • Woodworking
  • Baking and milling
  • Quarry work

HSE targeted inspections

The HSE are asking employers and workers to check the risk assessments and control measures they have in the workplace. HSE inspectors continue to visit businesses across Great Britain to checking that welding and working with metalworking fluids are planned correctly to minimise risk to workers’ health.
